Dr. José Lourenço Junior., was born on December 22nd, 1902, in Abiul, municipality of Pombal, son of José Lourenço and Constança Assunção. He died on February 7th, 1997 at his home in Avenida Restelo, 14, Lisbon.
He attended the primary school in Abiul and Pombal, with the teachers Gerardo dos Reis e Cunha and Gonçalves Figueira, being approved with distinction.
Although he wanted to became a doctor or a lawyer, his father didn’t have the resources to pay for the course.
He then talked to his grandfather, Mr. Morgado da Fonte Fria (Freixianda ) who told him that he would only help him if he wanted to became a priest, as doctors "kill people and lawyers are thiefs!" – this made him give up.
He was employed in Abiul pharmacy, (receiving no money for it) . when he was 15 years old, he was employed in pharmacy in Avis (Alentejo), and later on in a pharmacy in Lavos (Figueira da Foz) , where he was for 2 years (as he completed 18 years old) and then in a pharmacy in Figueira da Foz.
Subsequently he was employed in a medical warehouse in Figueira and it was also here where he had the trade and industrial course in this city.
He then bought a pharmacy in Rua da República, Figueira da Foz.
At the age of 24 he married with D. Otilia Pessoa Murta Lourenço, daughter of a pharmacist in Figueira da Foz, Mr. António Marques Murta.
At the age of 25, with two more neighbors, he purchased half a lottery ticket in Casa Viola. They won 200.000$ with this ticket and with his share of the prize he decided take the law degree, as he always dreamed of.
Although keeping the pharmacy in Figueira , he attented the first two years in only one year in Coimbra. At the age of 28 he sold the pharmacy in Figueira and came to Lisbo. In just one year, he finished the 3rd, 4th and 5th years in the Liceu Gil Vicente, with distinction. The following year he finished the 6th and 7 th years in the same High School, also with honors and at the age of 30 years old.
At age of 31, he enrolled at law school, finishing the 1st year with 14 points, and having finished the law school in 1936.
He was the author of several lessons of Direito Comercial from Professor Barbosa de Magalhães and the lessons of Família de Sucessões from Prof. Pinto Coelho.
He was the placed as a Deputy-Attorney and as interim delegate at Boa-Hora Court, in Lisbon, a position he held for six months and three months, respectively.
He came for 9 months, to Lisbon, and then enrolled the "Ordem dos Advogados".
After the stage for Lawyer, he opened his office at Rua Nova do Almada , 53-2º Dto , in Lisbon , where he began to practice.
However, at the request of one of his students , he worked as a lawyer in Santiago de Cacém, two days a week, where he remained for four years , accumulating activity with Lisbon office.
He was the representative of the "Ordem dos Advogados" in various congresses abroad, including Buenos Aires (Argentina ), Hague (Netherlands) and Madrid (Spai ). He was a member of the International Lawyers Association.
He practised for 58 years, also sponsoring actions in Brazil and in the UK, during the 50s .
In 1994 donated to the "Caixa de Previdência dos Advogados e Solicitadores" the sum of 150 million escudos, to support the widow’s lawyers and attorneys in a difficult situation. He received an honorary distinction, from that entity.
He founded the Foundation Otília Pessoa Murta Lourenço and husband Dr. José Lourenço Júnior, whose recognition was published in the Diário da República de 01/04/92, Portaria n.º 87/92 – 2ª série.
Its statutes were amended on the 15 th of March, 1994 by the Secretary of State for Social Security and on the 5 th of September, 1994 by the order of the Secretary of State for Internal Affairs , with the registration issued on the 27th of October, 1994, nº 21/94, the sheets 48 and 48 . of the book number 5 of Foundations of Social Solidarity (Official Gazette no. 276 of 11/29/94, 3rd série); the Foundation was then classified as a Private Institution of Social Solidarity (IPSS).
