Cuidar com os Sentidos: A importância dos Ambientes Multissensoriais (Pombal, Portugal)

  

           

The International Seminar "Caring for the Senses: The Importance of Multisensory Environments" was held on February 13, 2025, at the Auditorium of the Pombal Municipal Library. It was organized by the Dr. José Lourenço Júnior Foundation, in Abiul, and was supported by the Municipality of Pombal and the Erasmus+ Program.

The event featured a panel of excellent speakers, with the privilege of hearing Marc Thiry, Snoezelen Sans Frontiérès, a renowned expert in multisensory approaches from the Belgian Snoezelen School, who has influenced several international institutions, stand out. Prof. Thiry is recognized for his vast experience in the Snoezelen approach, an innovative methodology that combines sensory stimulation and humanized care, promoting well-being and quality of life

Karin Palmlöf – Pioneer in the implementation of Social and Therapeutic Horticulture and Gardening (HJST), according to the Palmlöf methodology.

Isabel Vaz Serra – With extensive experience in implementing innovative projects in IPSS and in promoting services and practices that improve the quality of life of older adults.

Paula Gómez-Vela – Specialist in the area of ​​Healing Environment, with recognized studies that prove that well-designed environments can accelerate recovery, reduce anxiety levels and even improve the effectiveness of medical treatments.

This seminar was a unique opportunity to learn from international experts who shared their experiences, best practices and knowledge on how multisensory environments can transform care and promote well-being at all ages.

There were 150 participants present, from various institutions, including Local Health Units, Santas Casa da Misericórdia, Cooperatives and Associations for the Education and Rehabilitation of Maladaptive Citizens, School Groups, Institutions and Social Centers, among many others.

54 municipalities from the north to the south of the country were represented, including Madeira and the Azores. The main areas of training of those registered were: approximately 15% Occupational Therapy, 14% Psychology, 11% Nursing, 10% Social Service, 7% Socio-Cultural Animation, among others.

The rhythm of life - motions and emotions through Snoezelen (Sweden)

The Fundação Otília Pessoa Murta Lourenço e marido Dr. José Lourenço Júnior had their application for the Erasmus + Program for Adult Education, 2023 approved, which means that it will benefit from development and networking activities at European level, which will contribute to improve the provision of services and diversify the technical knowledge of the staff, in terms of senior care.

Objectively, the approved application called “WELL-BEING AND CARE THROUGH THE SENSES” will allow the staff of Lar Otília Lourenço, in Abiul, to participate in specialized training in terms of multisensory approaches in the provision of care for the elderly, in two countries of the European Union, whose results will result in the institution's practices, in an effective benefit both for users and for the community.

Also for the community and partners, it represents a strengthening of the institution's dynamism, its values and its investment in society through the various initiatives.

It is expected that the sharing of results, lessons learned, achievements and conclusions and the contribution to the dissemination of good European practices will be presented in a seminar for technicians and the community in general.

It is recalled that the Erasmus+ Program supports training missions in adult education organizations abroad. These activities can be structured courses, training periods abroad, on-the-job monitoring/observation periods in schools or other relevant organisations. This is an excellent opportunity for the training and qualification of the institution's staff, as it allows the sharing of good practices, the opportunity to learn about methodologies and new approaches in the EU and the personal and professional enrichment of the employees involved.
